Osisko Approves C$990 Million Cariboo Build With Funding Still Partly Proposed

Osisko Gold’s board has formally approved construction of the Cariboo Gold Project, shifting the key investor focus from project approval to delivery of a C$990 million go-forward capital obligation before commercial production targeted for the second half of 2029.1

The September 14 update also places first gold pour earlier, in the first quarter of 2029, while distinguishing that milestone from commercial production, which the company expects in H2 2029.1 The construction decision is therefore a material step for the project, but it does not mean Cariboo is close to completion or operating at commercial scale.

As of July 31, 2026, Osisko estimated overall project completion at 22%. Detailed engineering was approximately 40% complete, while procurement and commitments for long-lead items were approximately 44% complete. The company said C$325 million had been committed to date.1 Those figures describe progress on discrete workstreams and commitments, rather than C$325 million of completed construction or a fully built mine.

Osisko presented total available and proposed estimated sources of capital of up to C$1.637 billion, including C$837 million in cash and equivalents.1 That is larger than the stated C$990 million go-forward capital obligation, but the release characterizes part of the figure as proposed sources, so it should not be read as evidence that every financing component has already been secured.

The announced package includes a US$30 million strategic private placement from an affiliate of Trafigura, as well as concentrate and doré offtake arrangements with Trafigura. It also includes a potential prepayment facility of up to US$120 million.1 A potential facility is not the same as funds already received, and the disclosed ceiling is not a statement that the full amount will necessarily be drawn.

That distinction matters because the formal construction decision converts Cariboo into an execution program with substantial remaining capital requirements. The company’s update provides evidence of cash resources, a strategic placement, offtake arrangements and a possible prepayment facility, but it does not, in the supplied release excerpt, set out completed funding for each element of the C$990 million obligation.1

For investors, the new development is not simply that Cariboo has received board approval. It is that Osisko has attached a defined remaining capital requirement, a first-gold target and a commercial-production target to a project still reported as 22% complete. Progress in engineering, long-lead procurement, commitments and the conversion of proposed capital sources into available funding will now be central markers of whether the H2 2029 commercial-production timetable remains on track.12

Cariboo’s construction approval is thus the start of a larger financing-and-execution test: Osisko has set a C$990 million go-forward obligation against a stated capital-source framework, while the project still has most of its development work ahead of it.1
