Arafura Raises Binding Nolans NdPr Offtake to 850 Tonnes a Year
Australia
The increase is material because it expands the portion of Nolans’ planned NdPr output that has an identified sales route before the project reaches its intended operating rate. The agreement also covers associated heavy rare earths, broadening its scope beyond the NdPr oxide volume specified in the announcement. Arafura said the initial five-year term can be extended by a further two years, but only by mutual agreement. 71
Commercial terms provide some price linkage without disclosing a fixed realised price. NdPr oxide will be priced in US dollars against an independent seaborne index, with Benchmark Mineral Intelligence indices and S&P Global Platts North America cited as examples. That structure should connect contract revenue to external market pricing rather than lock Arafura into a publicly stated long-term price. It also means the agreement does not eliminate exposure to rare-earth price movements; the eventual revenue outcome will depend on indexed prices, delivered volumes and the project’s ability to reach nameplate production. 7
The customer remains unnamed. Arafura describes it as a global raw-materials trader with approximately US$10 billion in annual revenue, more than 20 offices and exposure to over 50 traded commodities. The company said it generally intends to withhold counterparty identities unless disclosure becomes material, arguing that this protects commercially sensitive negotiations. That leaves investors unable to independently assess the buyer’s downstream end markets, credit profile or the degree to which the contract directly supports particular magnet-manufacturing or defence supply chains. 7
Still, the route through the US Project Vault initiative gives the transaction strategic relevance beyond a conventional trading arrangement. Arafura said the counterparty was selected under that initiative, positioning Nolans within an effort to develop supply options for critical materials outside China-linked processing chains. The binding contract consequently improves the project’s narrative as a prospective supplier of NdPr, a key magnet rare earth, to international markets. 71
The agreement should not be treated as evidence that Nolans has begun producing or that all project funding has been received. The contracted 850-tonne figure is explicitly tied to nameplate production, so it is a future operating-rate commitment rather than a current delivery level. The agreement also remains subject to customary conditions precedent. Neither Arafura’s announcement nor the contemporaneous report states that production has started or that construction financing has been received. 71
For Nolans, the immediate change is therefore commercial rather than operational: a larger binding sales commitment, a defined pricing mechanism and a longer potential customer relationship. The next tests are whether outstanding conditions are satisfied, when construction translates into production, and how much visibility Arafura can provide on the buyer and the wider contracted share of future output. Until then, the 850 tonnes a year is a strengthened route to market, not yet realised sales.
