Greenland has approved the mining and closure plans for Critical Metals Corp.’s Tanbreez project, establishing a framework for extraction and rehabilitation through September 2050. The October 5 announcement covers a 24-year period under the exploitation licence granted in 2020. It does not, by itself, authorise mine construction. 1

The approvals were signed on September 29 for Tanbreez Mining Greenland A/S under sections 77 and 80 of Greenland’s Mineral Activities Act. They describe the proposed mine, processing facilities, port infrastructure and eventual site closure at Killavaat Alannguat, between Narsaq and Qaqortoq in southern Greenland. 1

The distinction from a final construction permit is material. Critical Metals says it must still obtain activity-specific operating permits under sections 120 and 121, covering matters including environmental management, marine transport, health and safety, and mineral export and sales. Construction also depends on the required financial security being in place. The company has not presented the mining-plan approval as confirmation that those conditions are satisfied. 1

The approved extraction scope includes 19 elements: zirconium, hafnium, tantalum, niobium and 15 rare earths, among them neodymium, praseodymium, samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium and yttrium. That range distinguishes Tanbreez from projects focused predominantly on NdPr magnet feed. Yet permission to extract a named element says nothing about its recoverable grade, commercial payability or the feasibility of producing a saleable separated product. 1

For a polymetallic rare-earth project, those technical questions are consequential. Ore mineralogy, liberation, concentration, impurity rejection and downstream separation costs determine whether a broad element list can be converted into economic products. Investors should not treat the regulatory list as a forecast of annual output or a substitute for a bankable flowsheet, capital estimate and offtake structure.

The company has previously approved enabling facilities at Qaqortoq, including a pilot-plant and support complex. That work is distinct from permission to build the full Tanbreez mine. The new approval therefore reduces uncertainty around the long-term mine plan without eliminating the permitting, engineering and funding tasks associated with commercial development. 12

The next verifiable milestones are the grant of specific operating permits, disclosure of financial security, and a construction decision supported by an executable technical and funding plan. The 2050 expiry provides a long operating horizon on paper; the value of that horizon will depend on when the project can legally and economically begin producing. 1
