Capricorn Metals enters FY27 with a balance sheet that makes financing its growth less contentious than execution. The Australian gold producer ended June with A$504.8 million of net cash after Karlawinda generated A$470.2 million of operating cash flow, while underlying profit after tax rose 59% to A$327.2 million.
The immediate operating test is Karlawinda. FY26 production reached a record 123,589 ounces at an all-in sustaining cost of A$1,629 an ounce. Capricorn is guiding to 137,000-147,000 ounces in FY27 at A$1,900-A$2,100 an ounce as the expanded plant moves toward a long-term production rate of about 150,000 ounces a year. Commissioning is still focused on electrical close-out in the crushing circuit, with ore commissioning expected in the coming weeks.
That makes the next leg of the investment case less about whether Capricorn can fund growth and more about whether it can convert permits and studies into a second mine without losing the cost discipline that built its cash pile. The company spent A$133.4 million on the Karlawinda expansion and early works at Mt Gibson during FY26, yet still increased net cash by A$149.1 million and declared 10 cents a share of fully franked dividends for the year.
Mt Gibson is the scale change. Capricorn’s July reserve update lifted group Ore Reserves 33% to 5.24 million ounces and Mineral Resources 29% to 8.66 million ounces. Mt Gibson now carries 3.31 million ounces of open-pit reserves plus a maiden 365,000-ounce underground reserve. The updated pre-feasibility study envisages 3.5 million ounces of production over a 19.25-year mine life, including four full years averaging about 260,000 ounces annually as underground mining overlaps the open pits.
The economics are unusually strong on the company’s assumptions: life-of-mine AISC of A$1,870 an ounce, A$12.0 billion of pre-tax free cash flow and a post-capex pre-tax NPV7.5 of A$6.1 billion. Development capital is estimated at A$345 million for plant and infrastructure plus A$129 million for 15 months of pre-production mining. Importantly, reserve pit optimisations use gold prices of A$2,200-A$2,600 an ounce, well below the spot-price environment cited in the study, which provides some buffer against lower metal prices.
But a pre-feasibility study is not a mine. Capricorn received federal environmental approval for Mt Gibson in June under Australia’s EPBC Act and submitted its Environmental Review Document into the Western Australian process in July. Remaining state approvals, including environmental and works approvals, are still required before development can proceed as planned. Management is targeting site development in the second quarter of FY27, subject to permitting.
There is also a cost-transition issue at Karlawinda. FY27 AISC guidance of A$1,900-A$2,100 an ounce is materially above FY26’s A$1,629 despite the higher planned production rate. Part of that reflects the normal mix of sustaining expenditure and operating conditions around an expansion year, but it means investors should not assume throughput growth translates one-for-one into margin expansion.
Capricorn therefore has a cleaner setup than many developers: an operating mine, no debt, an unhedged gold position, a growing reserve base and internal cash generation that can shoulder a large part of the next build. The next catalyst is less another headline resource number than evidence that Karlawinda reaches its expanded run rate and that Western Australian approvals keep Mt Gibson on schedule. If both happen, the company’s stated path to more than 400,000 ounces of annual group production becomes substantially more tangible; if either slips, the current valuation will have to absorb a longer wait for that second-mine cash flow.
